What is Pads-it
Top

Pads-it is an easy to use program designed to work with your Xerox  printers.  It has been tested on Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003.   Printers tested are Xerox 61xx and Xerox Nuvera.  Pads-it may work with other Xerox model printers and other brands of printers that accept a PostScript file using LPR (Line Printer Remote) printing.

As the name implies, Pads-it, makes padding jobs easy.  It also provides an ideal solution when the offset stacking feature of your printer is not a practical solution.  Pads-it also prints a "Banner Page" at the top of each job so you can identify the job.  The "Banner Page" may be useful as a packaging label as well.

One example to consider; you receive a request to have 500 copies of one original printed and padded in 50's. Pads-it makes this simple by printing the 500 copies and separating them into 50's in one operation.  This eliminates counting the sheets and manually slip sheeting them before applying padding cement.

Pads-it is also used when you are requested to print uncollated copies of multiple pages, separated into stacks of a specified quantity, to be packaged and shipped.  The offset stacking feature of the printer fails at the packaging stage because there is no easy way to keep the stacks offset.  When the requester receives the job, they cannot easily find the end of one stack and the beginning of another.  Pads-it solves this problem with a slip sheet where the stacks would be offset making it easy for the requester to separate the stacks.

User Friendly Features

Simple Set-up.  When you install Pads-it there is only one optional form that you may want to complete.  This form asks for your company name and address to be used on the "Banner Page".  All other information that Pads-it needs is built as the software is used.

Simple User Interface: Pads-it is simple and easy to use.  There is nothing hiding deep in a menu.  In fact there are minimal menu choices as almost everything you ever have to do can be done on the main Pads-it form.

Easy Paper Color and Printer Selections.  Type the first one or two characters in the drop down boxes and the selection is complete

Add Custom Paper Colors and Printers on the fly:  If you type in a Paper Color or Printer name that is not known to Pads-it, you are prompted to save it or not.  Once saved these items will always be available.

Delete Paper Colors and Printers easily:  Simply right click on the selection and you are provided a choice to delete it or not.

Pads-it Remembers:  From job to job and session to session, Pads-it remembers what printer you last used and makes that your selection.  Pads-it remembers the location you found your last PDF file and Job Ticket File and takes you there the next time you browse for a file.

Pads-it imports Xerox® Job Tickets:  If this feature is used the entire form is almost totally completed for you.

Pads-it-Plus imports webCRD® Job Tickets:  This feature is an available add-on, if used the entire form is totally completed for you.

The "Sides" selection lets you choose to run the job simplex (1-sided) or duplex (2-sided).

The "Paper Size" selection lets you choose 8 ½" x 11" or 8½" x 14".  Pads-it  automatically selects the paper size based on the page size of the first page in the PDF.       Top

For example, if you want 10 pads of 50 sheets, you You could choose to print  8 1/2" x 11" pages on 8 1/2" x 14" paper if you want.  You could also choose to print 8 ½" x 14" pages on 8½" x 11" paper but do not do it.  Pads-it cannot resize 81/2" x 14" to fit on 81/2" x 11".

Adding a Paper Color     Top

For example, if you want 10 pads of 50 sheets, you
As mentioned the "Paper Color" field is a special drop down box.  What makes it special is the fact that you can add or delete colors from the list whenever you choose.  The image to the right shows the "Add New Paper Color" message box.  This message box appears when you enter the name of a color not included in the list and hit the tab key.  In this case, the color "Salmon" was entered. Salmon is not in the list of colors and the message box appeared. Once the message box appears you have choices. One choice is to "Add" the color "Salmon" to the list by clicking the "Yes" button.  Adding the color to the list makes it available for all future jobs.  The second choice is to click the "No" button.  Clicking the "No" button returns you to the "Paper Color" field.  Once there, you can leave the "Paper Color" name for one time use on the job you are working, or you can select another color if you like.

Deleting a Paper Color     Top

For example, if you want 10 pads of 50 sheets, you
You can also delete a color from the list by selecting the color you want to delete and right clicking on the field.  In this case Salmon paper color was selected and right clicked on and the message box at right appeared.  You can chose to delete the color by clicking on the "Yes" button.  If you decide you do not want to delete the color simply click the "No" button.

Completing the "Printer" Section     Top

For example, if you want 10 pads of 50 sheets, you
The printer section is where you choose the printer you want to send the job to.
The printer "Name" field is a special drop down box much like the Paper Color drop down box.

The first time you use Pads-it there will be no printers to select. You will have to add one.

Before trying to add a printer you must know the printer's IP address or Host Name and the Queue name that you want the job to go to.  Once you know these things, you can add the printer.

You add a printer by typing any name you would like to use to identify the printer in the "Name" field and then hit the tab key.   Once you do that, the "Add Printer" form will pop-up as shown below.

In this case the name "2-DT" was entered in the printer "Name" field and the "Add Printer" form opened with "2-DT" in it's "Name" field.

Enter a valid "Queue" name then choose to enter either a valid "Host Name" or IP address.

Once you complete the form you must click the "Test Printer" button.  If the test is successful, a message box will appear confirming it. Click the "OK" button in the message box and then click the "Save" button on the "Add Printer" form. It is important to use the "Save" button to save the printer information before you close the form.  If you do not, the printer will not be available to use. Once the printer is saved, you are returned to the main Pads-it form and the added printer will be included in the list of printers.

If the test fails, a message box will appear giving you a general idea why.  Printer tests fail because:

1. The Queue Name is not correct.
2. The Host Name or IP Address is not correct.
3. The PC you are running Pads-it on is not connected to the network.
4. The Printer is not connected to the Network
5. The Printer is not set-up to respond to "LPR" (Line Printer Remote printing) requests.

If the printer test fails, your Network Administrator might be able to assist you with network problems and your Xerox Technician might be able to assist with setting up the printer to accept "LPR" request.

Once you have successfully added a printer,  you can send your first job to it by clicking on the "Send to Printer" button.
A progress bar will begin to show progress after you click the "Send to Printer" button. When the send is complete, a message box appears to inform you as shown at right.

Deleting a printer works the same as deleting a paper color.  You simply right click on the printer name and respond to the message box.     Top

For example, if you want 10 pads of 50 sheets, you
Printer Naming Tip:  Start the name of each printer with a different character.  This will allow you to type the first character in the printer "Name" field to select it.  For example: You have two printers you commonly call "Printer 1" and "Printer 2".  If you add them to Pads-it as "Printer 1" and "Printer 2", you would have to type the whole name for "Printer 2" to appear in the field or use the drop down arrow and select "Printer 2."  If you name the printers "1-Printer" and "2-Printer", all you have to do is enter "2" in the printer "Name" field and "2-Printer" will be selected.

Importing Xerox® Job Ticket Data     Top

For example, if you want 10 pads of 50 sheets, you
Pads-it can import a Xerox® Job Ticket and complete much of the Pads-it form with data contained in the ticket.

To find the job ticket, you must understand the folder structure as shown at right.  Notice that the highlighted folder is called "PadJobs".  The name of the folder is not important. It can be named anything you prefer.  What you put in the folder is important.

In the sample, you see two folders, two PDF files and two .RDO files.  Using the job named 5219467 you see a folder called 5219467.con.  It is in this folder you will find a file named 5219467.xpf, which is the Xerox® job ticket.

The 5219467.con folder and the 5219467.xpf file within it have to be put into the parent folder.  In this case the parent folder is called "Pad Jobs".   If you have jobs sent to your printer over a network or via web submission, you can ask your Xerox Analyst to help you create a queue on your printer that will move the folders to the "PadJobs" folder on the PC running Pads-it.  If you use Xerox® FreeFlow® Software this can be done using a tool called "NetAgent".  When you have the job in your "PadJobs" folder, open the related .rdo file using your Xerox FreeFlow®  software and save it as a .PDF in the "PadJobs" folder.

Once done, you can use Pads-it to import the job ticket information.

To import a Xerox® job ticket, choose the "Import" menu and then choose "Xerox® Job Ticket".  This will make the    "Browse for Ticket" button visible.

Click on the "Browse for Ticket" button.

Ticket browse
The "Browse for Ticket" button opens a "Choose File" window that you use to navigate to and select the .xpf file you want to use.

Pads-it will automatically select the proper PDF, assuming it has the same name as the .xpf file, and it is in the parent directory that the .con directory with the same name is in.  If this is not the case you will be prompted to browse for the PDF file.

In addition, data contained within the .xpf file will import into the Pads-it form as shown below.

In this case the correct PDF was selected and the "Job Notes" section was completed with the information found in the job ticket.

Also note that the entries in the "Job Specs" section were also filled in.  It is important to double check these entries.  This is important because the job ticket only contains the total number of copies requested and does not  know how many pads and how many sheets per pad are required.

Importing a webCRD® Job Ticket Import webCRD      Top

For example, if you want 10 pads of 50 sheets, you To import a webCRD® job ticket, choose the "Import" menu and then choose "WebCRD® Job Ticket"  This will open the Pads-it browser.  This browser is only to be used to navigate to your webCRD®  site, otherwise results are unpredictable.

The first time the browser opens you will have to enter the address to your webCRD® site.  Once done, the address field will be filled each time the browser is opened.

Enter the User Name and Password your site requires and click the "Go" button.  Notice the instructions in red as you use the browser.

Pads-it Browser

After you click the "Go" button, you will be taken directly to the "Orders in Pre-Production" page as shown below.  On this page click only on the magnifying glass icon to the right of the job you want to print.  This will start an automatic process that will gather the job ticket data and import it into the main Pads-it form.  When that process is done, if you are working on a PC running Windows® XP®,  the browser will be at a page where you must select a PDF.

If you are working on a Windows® 2003 Server®, you will be taken back to the page shown below. You will be directed to click on the magnifying glass to the right of the job you want to print.  This will open the page where you must select a PDF.

browser

Once the ticket data has been collected the browser will be at the page shown to the right.  This is the page where you select the PDF you want to use.  To get to the PDF links you may have to scroll down to the "Documents" section.Browser PDF

Click on a PDF link (not the "View" icon) and the PDF will open in the browser using whatever PDF reader your web browser uses as shown below.

Once the PDF is open,  look for the icon that looks like this icon and click on it.  Pads-it will save the PDF to a temporary folder and close the browser window.

The Pads-it Banner Page

The Pads-it Banner Page is printed and placed at the top of each job.  The main purpose of the Banner Page is to identify the job below it.  The Banner Page may be useful as a packing slip or packaging label as well.
